Period 6 Blog 4.5 Processed Carbs

Many of you are starting to realize that your current way of eating is slanted more towards the macronutrient of carbohydrates. Even more problematic is that many of us are relying on processed carbohydrates for our meals, especially in the morning. Processed carbohydrates are foods that have had all or most of their natural nutrients and fiber removed in order to make them easier to transport and store. Pretty much anything that can sit on a shelf in a bag or a box for a long time without going bad, is a processed carbohydrate.

Why are processed carbs so bad? It's a complicated process but stick with me and I will try to make it as simple as possible. When eaten, carbohydrates are broken down into sugars and circulated through the blood for the body to use as energy. Processed carbohydrates are already partially broken down so the body converts them to sugar very quickly. Too much sugar in the blood is a bad thing, so your body produces insulin in response to a rise in blood sugar. Insulin's job is to allow glucose to enter cells to be used as energy and to store excess glucose. Constant consumption of processed carbohydrates means rapid elevation of blood sugar levels followed by a rapid release of insulin to lower the blood sugar quickly. This sequence of unstable blood sugar levels leads to a condition called hypoglycemia or low blood sugar. In response to this your body craves food, especially sugar and the process repeats itself creating this vicious cycle that can eventually lead to any number of metabolic diseases.

This process created in part by the over consumption of process foods has lead to an increase in type 2 diabetes in our generation. This blog is a little bit longer and I will give you two weeks to complete it. It will count as a summative assessment towards your fourth quarter grade. I want you to spend some time reading up on type 2 diabetes and in your own words and in no more than two paragraphs, explain to me;

1. What is type 2 diabetes?

2. Why it is a concern to your generation?

32 comments:

  1. 1)Type 2 diabetes is the most common form of diabetes. People how have type 2 diabetes, do not produce enough insulin in their body or their cells ignore the insulin. Sugars and starches turn into glucose to fuel cells and the insulin is needed to take sugar from the blood in your cells. If the glucose builds up in the blood and not in the cells it can cause diabetes.
2)Since diabetes is caused by excess glucose in people’s bloodstream. Many people who are overweight therefore have type 2 diabetes because their fat interferes with their body trying to use insulin. In recent statistics about 1 in 3 or 35.70% or 97.1 million people in the U.S. are overweight. Since this many people are overweight and in risk of getting type 2 diabetes, type 2 diabetes is a concern to our generation.

  2. 1. In type 2 diabetes the body does not produce enough insulin or the cells ignore the insulin.
    2. The best way to prevent type 2 diabetes is to eat healthy foods, exercise, and main a healthy weight. In our generation, obesity is becoming greater, and kids don't exercise as much because they sit at home on the computer

  4. 1.is a disorder that is characterized by high blood glucose in the context of insulin resistance and relative insulin deficiency.[1] Diabetes is often initially managed by increasing exercise and dietary modification. As the condition progresses, medications are typically needed.

2.Because so many people eat unhealthy.

  6. Type 2 diabetes is the most common type of diabetes and is resulted from having high blood sugar. Many people show no symptoms when having type 2 diabetes, but some of the symptoms include, blurred vision, fatigue, increased appetite, increased thirst, and increased urination. Type 2 diabetes is a concern for our generation because there is currently still no cure available, and causes many hassles. Since the buildup of sugar increases urination, it can lead to dehydration. The dehydration can cause a life-threatening diabetic coma. The high sugar levels can also cause nerve damage and damage to small blood vessels which can lead to heart attack or stroke. You must also check what you eat and check your blood levels a lot throughout the day.

  7. type 2 diabetes is the most common form of diabetes, and it is when the body either does not produce enough insulin, or the cells ignore the insulin. Insulin in neccessary because the body needs glucose for energy, and the insulin converts all sugars into glucose. When the glucose only buuilds up and does not turn ito energy , it leads to diabetes.

It is a concern to our generation because 17.9 million people in the U.S. suffer from it, and a great number of them are obese children with different lifestyles. Kids who doo not excercise but continue to eat unhealthy foods are at risk to become diabetic

Type two diabetes is a lifelong desease where you have too much sugar in your blood. it is the more common type of diabetes.

    2. Why it is a concern to your generation?
it is a concern for my generation because many kids now adays eat alot of junk food and dont exercise, risking getting diabetes.

It's a concern to our generation because more and more kids are getting it. With the invention of video games, TV, and instant messaging, kids and teens are spending less time physically active.

  12. 1. Type 2 diabetes is the most common form of diabetes. It's a disease that effects how the body uses glucose. In type 2 diabetes, the body can't respond to or make enough insulin. Without insulin, glucose can't get into cells so it stays in the bloodstream. This causes the blood sugar level to raise.

    2. it is a concern to our generation because many people eat a lot of unhealthy food and do not exercise enough

  13. Type 2 Diabetes is a an auto-immune disease when the pancreas can only produce little insulin. When one has type 2, their own cells attack the pancreas which would let the pancreas stop the production of insulin cells.

Type 2 diabetes is a problem for our generation because type 2 is caused by obeasity and by the high fat, high sugar that americans love. Kid are getting less and less exercise due to new inventions.

  16. 1.)it is a disorder that is characterized by high blood glucose in the context of insulin resistance. It is often cause by excess amounts of sugars in the blood stream.
2.) this is especially dangerous to our generation because of all the unhealthy restaurants in our society. Plus, advertising for these unhealthy product cause us to consumer even more, making the danger even greater.

  17. 1. Type two diabetes is a condition in which the body makes either too little insulin or can't properly convert glucose into energy.
    2. This is a concern because it is caused by unhealthy life choices, such as lack of exercise and eating junk food.

  21. 1. Type 2 diabetes is when the blood has a high glucose content and the body can't produce enough insulin/rejects the insulin.

    2. It's a concern for us because the rate of people diagnosed with diabetes is increasing rapidly because people are not getting the right amount of exercise needed to stay healthy. People who don't eat healthy and don't exercise have a greater risk at becoming diabetic

  24. Type 2 diabetes is when the pancrius cannot produce enough insulin to keep up with the amount of sugar the person is eating, and it causes glucose to build up in the bloodstream.

This is a problem for our generation because so many kids do not exercise and eat large amounts of junk food, so they are obese and very susceptible to this disease.

  25. Type 2 diabetes is the most common type of diabetes. Type 2 diabetes is caused by the effect of the body not producing insulin. Insulin turns all sugars into glucose which turns into energy and if the body is not producing insulin it leads to diabetes.

Its a concern because many Americans today suffer from diabetes which leads to a shorter life expectancy.

  28. 1. Type 2 diabetes, once known as adult-onset or noninsulin-dependent diabetes, is a chronic condition that affects the way your body metabolizes sugar (glucose), your body's main source of fuel. When you have type 2 diabetes, your body is resistant to the effects of insulin — a hormone that regulates the movement of sugar into your cells — or your body doesn't produce enough insulin to maintain a normal glucose level.type 2 diabetes can be life-threatening.

    2. Type 2 diabetes has changed from a disease of our grandparents and parents to a disease of our children. As more and more children and young adults develop this devastating disease, it has become apparent that we have much to learn about who in the pediatric population is at risk to develop type 2 diabetes, why they develop this disease, how to treat it, and, most importantly, how to prevent this “new epidemic” from destroying future generations of Americans.
