Period 8 Team Games Blog 4 Hockey

We are starting our hockey season today.  Hockey is a great sport that combines the need for coordination with the need to be fit.  Based on the physical nature of our basketball season, I am a bit concerned about the hockey season.  We need to enact some rules in order to keep everyone safe and keep the games fun.

For this weeks blog, I want you to think of two rules that will help make the hockey unit more enjoyable for all.  Let me know what they are and be sure to include your name in your comment.

Period 7 Weight Training Blog 4 Trunk Strength

Watch the video below, it discusses the trunk and it's many movements as well as the importance of being able to stabilize the trunk while we are moving.  So many times we think of our trunk or our core as just our abs, but there is a lot more involved than that.
I have been preaching the idea that we need to maintain a stable spine throughout our movements in this class.  This weeks blog will count as a summative assessment and you have a 50/50 shot of getting it right. Fill in the blank with either flexion or extension, be sure to include your name, I will not post the answer until next week.

Your spine is most stable when in __________. (flexion or extension)

Period 8 Basketball Blog #3 Off the Ball

We will start our 5 0n 5 play this week.   There will be 10 people on the court at a time and only 1 ball.  This means the majority of the time you will be without the ball or find yourself defending someone who does not have the ball.  It is important to have a some strategies in mind for what you are going to do when you find yourself in this position, both offensively and defensively.

For this weeks blog, I want you to think about what you are going to do when you do not have the ball.  Give me one offensive strategy you can use when you do not have the ball to help your team score, and one defensive strategy you can use to help your team prevent another team from scoring on you.  We will discuss this in class but if you are confused let me know.

Period 7 Weight Training Early Weakness?

We are starting to work through all of our exercises and our various fitness assessments, at this point you should be identifying things that you naturally do well and things that you struggle with.  Nobody is great at every lift the first time they do it.  It takes time and practice to become proficient at these lifts. In the same way not everyone is built for long runs or heavy lifting.  There are some things you are naturally good at and some you struggle with.  I would argue that you get better faster by working on the things that you are not very good at, rather than just choosing to do exercises you know well and like.

For this weeks blog let me know what one lift, or area of fitness that you have the most problems with.  Also let me know what you are doing to address this area of weakness.

Period 4 Weight Training

We had some good suggestions for rules to the class and I think I can sum most of them up by saying show up for class ready to work and work hard.  So those will be our two rules this semester.

We will get into attacking our measurement sheets this week and start to populate the board with some names.  We take a variety of measurements because fitness is a dynamic thing.  It does not necessarily mean being strong or fast or big or small, it can be any or all of those things.  For this weeks blog, I want you to define what the word fitness means to you in one sentence.

Period 8 Team Games

14 of you have voted for your sports to date and so far we have 7 sports total and they fall in the following order.
  1. Football
  2. Basketball
  3. Hockey
  4. Handball
  5. Soccer
  6. Ultimate Frisbee
  7. Flickerball

We will wait until we can get outside for football.  So we will start our first unit with basketball.  For this weeks blog, I want you to get to know your teammates better.  List each member of your team and one strength they bring to the team.
