Period 7 Blog 4.5 Processed Carbs

Many of you are starting to realize that your current way of eating is slanted more towards the macronutrient of carbohydrates. Even more problematic is that many of us are relying on processed carbohydrates for our meals, especially in the morning. Processed carbohydrates are foods that have had all or most of their natural nutrients and fiber removed in order to make them easier to transport and store. Pretty much anything that can sit on a shelf in a bag or a box for a long time without going bad, is a processed carbohydrate.

Why are processed carbs so bad? It's a complicated process but stick with me and I will try to make it as simple as possible. When eaten, carbohydrates are broken down into sugars and circulated through the blood for the body to use as energy. Processed carbohydrates are already partially broken down so the body converts them to sugar very quickly. Too much sugar in the blood is a bad thing, so your body produces insulin in response to a rise in blood sugar. Insulin's job is to allow glucose to enter cells to be used as energy and to store excess glucose. Constant consumption of processed carbohydrates means rapid elevation of blood sugar levels followed by a rapid release of insulin to lower the blood sugar quickly. This sequence of unstable blood sugar levels leads to a condition called hypoglycemia or low blood sugar. In response to this your body craves food, especially sugar and the process repeats itself creating this vicious cycle that can eventually lead to any number of metabolic diseases.

This process created in part by the over consumption of process foods has lead to an increase in type 2 diabetes in our generation. This blog is a little bit longer and I will give you two weeks to complete it. It will count as a summative assessment towards your fourth quarter grade. I want you to spend some time reading up on type 2 diabetes and in your own words and in no more than two paragraphs, explain to me;

1. What is type 2 diabetes?

2. Why it is a concern to your generation?

28 comments:

  1. Type 2 diabetes is the most common form of diabetes. It means that the sugar that turns into glucose that you get from food, clogs up in your blood instead of getting carried to cells. This happens because you are either not producing enough insulin, or your cells are ignoring it, causing high blood pressure.

It is a concern to my generation because kids are eating processed and packaged food more than homemade, natural food. The packaged food has carbs that are already semi-processed. This speeds up sugar production in your body, calling for more insulin. When your body isn't able to produce enough insulin to even out the glucose in your blood, you have type 2 diabetes.

  2. Type 2 diabetes is the most common kind of diabetes in America and its an a chronic condition that affects the way your body metabolizes sugar, your body's main source of fuel. And this kind of diabetes also alffects the job that our body "insulin" has, which is to regulate the sugar level in our blood.

The consequences of "diabetes type 2" can be life threatening and there's no cure for it either, but you can control it or manage it, by eating healthy and doing a lot of excersice trying to keep a healthy body.

  4. Type 2 diabetes is a chronic (lifelong) disease marked by high levels of sugar (glucose) in the blood.

It is a serious concern for our generation because we eat increasing amounts of processed foods and foods that are rich in glucose. It can be life threatening and most people dont get enough excersize which increases the chances of getting diabetes.

Type 2 diabetes can be life threatening and unfortunately there is no cure for either form of diabetes. This fact is important for my generation to understand because the average kid eats more unhealthy foods and does less exercise which in turn raises sugar levels causing medical problems.

With the way our society eats and excersizes it is a major problem because people don't take care of themselves well. and for many including myself we have to be really careful because this can be genetically inherited so if your parentss or grandparents have it you are more likely to get it. This is very common in our generation because people are eating more processed foods than home-made food.

  9. Type 2 diabetes is the most common form of diabetes. Millions of Americans have been diagnosed with type 2 diabetes, and many more are unaware they are at high risk. Some groups have a higher risk for developing type 2 diabetes than others. Type 2 diabetes is more common in African Americans, Latinos, Native Americans, and Asian Americans, Native Hawaiians and other Pacific Islanders, as well as the aged population.

In type 2 diabetes, either the body does not produce enough insulin or the cells ignore the insulin. Insulin is necessary for the body to be able to use glucose for energy. When you eat food, the body breaks down all of the sugars and starches into glucose, which is the basic fuel for the cells in the body. Insulin takes the sugar from the blood into the cells. When glucose builds up in the blood instead of going into cells, it can lead to diabetes complications.

It is important to my generations because many people today, aren't eating as healthy as they should be, where there is at least or at most over 65% of U.S. citizens or so, go to McDonalds or any other fast food restaurants more than or at least 3 times a day which can lead to diabetes which can cause a person's future children to more likely or probable to get or have more of a chance to get or have Type 2 diabetes as a kid or when they are born, which is bad for them because type 2 diabetes isnt like a sickness that can just be cured, instead it sticks with a person for their entire life and it could possibly kill them.

  10. type 2 diabetes is when the body does not produce enough insulin, or the cells ignore the insulin. Insulin is necessary for the body to be able to use glucose for energy. Glucose builds up in the blood and does not get to the cells which is the cause of the disease.
It is a concern to our generation because of the types of food we are choosing to eat and the lifestyle we choose now-a-days.

  11. Type 2 diabetes is a chronic illness developed later in life due to certain lifestyle conditions. Often due to consumption of too much sugar, more than be body can process at one time also caused by obesity. Type 1 is different than type 2 in that it is developed later in life as opposed to being passed down by parents and being a disorder one is born with.
It affects my generation because evryone is trying to do berything fast and cram a lot into schedules so we settle for speed over a quality meal resulting in a lot of processed food and obesity spiking.

  12. Type 2 diabetes is a condition where your body does not produce the correct amount of insulin, so that blood sugar levels in your body are unstable. This can lead to high blood pressure and other problems.

This is a concern to our generation because we are we are eating more processed foods than we used to, so it is harder for our bodies to metabolize all of the processed sugars.

  13. Type 2 diabetes is followed by type on diabetes. Both are very dangerous. Type 2 is a chronic condition and needs close attention because with one bad move it can be very very dangerous. Diabetes deals with the amount of sugar you have in your body. You have to have a certain amount.

Its a concern to my generation because more and more foods are being produced with many unhealty sugars. Also this generation is more lazy when it comes to exercising because of all of the new technology coming out, kids spend way to much time with those.

  17. 1. The most common form of diabetes mellitus. People with type 2 diabetes produce insulin, but they do not make enough insulin or their bodies can not use the insulin they make.

    2. One of the leading causes to type two diabetes is obesity which is one of the biggest concernes to our generation.

  22. A condition characterized by high blood glucose levels caused by either a lack of insulin or the body's inability to use insulin efficiently. Type 2 diabetes develops most often in middle-aged and older adults but can appear in young people. Type 2 diabetes is the most common form of diabetes, affecting 90% or more of people living with diabetes.

It is a concer in our generation because people in our generation has the highest percentage of obesity and this will cause diabetes.

Type 2 diabetes is the disease in which the body does not produce enough insulin to digest sugar

it concerns our generation more than any other because obesity is greatest in our generation and children are more prone to the disease

  25. Type 2 diabetes is the most common form of diabetes. type 2 diabetes happens more to obese people and right now in our generation is affecting the children because they are not been fed the right foods and they are getting fat as they grow.
the biggest concern is that if this keeps going on, in the future everybody is going to end up with type 2 diabetes.

  26. Type 2 diabetes is a metabolic disorder in which the body does not produce enough insulin and has glucose levels that are too high. it is caused both by genetics and by poor diet

It is a huge concern for our generation because of the amount of processed foods we eat. this poor diet makes our generation largely at risk.

  27. Type 2 Diabetes is a condition that arises when the body loses its ability to produce insulin, or the cells ignore the insulin anyway. Complications can kill, when the bloodstream has a high concentration of glucose.

It's a problem for my generation because of the number of people who have high-carbohydrate diets. This sort of diet, along with the tendencies for minorities (who especially consume high-carb foods, usually out of necessity) to get the disease means that the number of people at risk of T2 Diabetes is increasing rapidly, and could affect a large chunk of the population.

  28. Type 2 diabites is when your body does not produce enough insulin, or your body does not accept insulin. The amount of sugar in your blood is unstable, and can lead to high blood pressure.

It is a concern to my generation because most people would rather have convenient food in the morning, rather thann eat nutritious food. This results in obesity and diabetes.
