Many of you are starting to realize that your current way of eating is slanted more towards the macronutrient of carbohydrates. Even more problematic is that many of us are relying on processed carbohydrates for our meals, especially in the morning. Processed carbohydrates are foods that have had all or most of their natural nutrients and fiber removed in order to make them easier to transport and store. Pretty much anything that can sit on a shelf in a bag or a box for a long time without going bad, is a processed carbohydrate.
Why are processed carbs so bad? It's a complicated process but stick with me and I will try to make it as simple as possible. When eaten, carbohydrates are broken down into sugars and circulated through the blood for the body to use as energy. Processed carbohydrates are already partially broken down so the body converts them to sugar very quickly. Too much sugar in the blood is a bad thing, so your body produces insulin in response to a rise in blood sugar. Insulin's job is to allow glucose to enter cells to be used as energy and to store excess glucose. Constant consumption of processed carbohydrates means rapid elevation of blood sugar levels followed by a rapid release of insulin to lower the blood sugar quickly. This sequence of unstable blood sugar levels leads to a condition called hypoglycemia or low blood sugar. In response to this your body craves food, especially sugar and the process repeats itself creating this vicious cycle that can eventually lead to any number of metabolic diseases.
This process created in part by the over consumption of process foods has lead to an increase in type 2 diabetes in our generation. This blog is a little bit longer and I will give you two weeks to complete it. It will count as a summative assessment towards your fourth quarter grade. I want you to spend some time reading up on type 2 diabetes and in your own words and in no more than two paragraphs, explain to me;
1. What is type 2 diabetes?
2. Why it is a concern to your generation?
Kevin Lee
ReplyDelete1) Type 2 Diabetes is where your body doesn't produce as much insulin as a normal person, so you have trouble getting energy from sugar/carbs. Your blood gets filled with sugar, so your body keeps making more insulin to absorb the sugary but it doesn't work. It usually comes with a lot of other symptoms, making you excessively hungry, thirsty, or tired. It's usually found in old[er] people (45+}, overweight people, and minorities.
2)It's a bigger threat to our generation because we have a generation of horrible eaters, the obesity rate's going up, and we tend to have worse cholesterol because we don't watch what we eat. In general our generation's a lot lazier (another cause), eat a hell of a lot of fat (obesity), and some of us use drugs (another cause). Type 2 diabetes is also caused by, and causes obesity so it cycles in our lives.
1. Type 2 diabetes, also known as adult on-set diabetes, is characterized by high blood glucose in context with insulin resistance. It can be caused by obesity, high cholesteral, etc, (anything that is promoted by an unactive lifestyle).
ReplyDelete2. Type 2 Diabetes is a concern to our generation, because the rate of obesity is going up alarmingly fast and the more obese the population is, the greater the risk for more cases of type 2 diabetes.

1. Type 2 diabetes, is a chronic condition that affects the way your body metabolizes sugar (glucose), your body's main source of fuel. It is more common in people over 45 and when you are over weight.
ReplyDelete2. It is more of a problem in my generation is because we have really bad eaters and most of our generation is over weight. Some people don't exercise anymore.
Neofytos Panagos
Type 2 diabetes is the most common type of diabetes affecting about 21 million people. Type 2 diabetes people produce insulin but not enough insulin and the body can not use the insulin very effectively. It is a concern for out generation because our generation is obese and tpye 2 diabetes comes from obesity and people who are inactive
ReplyDelete1. type 2 diabetes is caused by high blood glucose by insulin resistance
ReplyDelete2. type 2 diabetes is a problem to our generation because its controled by exercise and thats a problem this generation has

1. Type 2 diabetes is when your body has high blood glucose or low insulin. Risk for type 2 diabetes include aging, an unhealthy diet, and litle exercise.
ReplyDelete2 It is a concern to our generation because of the rise amoungst young people. A rise in high fructose corn syrup consumption as well as a decline in the overa;; quality of our food help type 2 diabetes form. A decline in exercise amoungst the youth also threatens us.
tpye 2 diabetes is when your body is resistant to the effects of insulin or your body doesn't produce enough insulin to maintain a normal glucose level.
ReplyDeleteIt is a problem for our generation because more people are obese and do not exercise which results in a higher risk for diabetes.

1) type 2 diabetes is a metabolic disorder that is characterized by high blood glucose in the context of insulin resistance and relative insulin deficiency
ReplyDelete2) This is such a concern for my generation because a large amount of our youth has problems with obesity and don't get enough exercise to stay healthy
Jack Clampitt
1. Type two diabetes deals with the body's inability to produce enough insulin or the decrease in cells of the body responding to insulin in most cases ignoring it entirely. Insulin is what drives the body to use glucose for energy. What happens is that with the lack of enough insulin, the glucose stays in the blood leading to diabetes complications. Or because the cells don't respond to insulin, that too can cause an increase in glucose in the blood stream. Which then causes the body's cells (who if you remember are dependent on glucose) to not function properly.
ReplyDelete2. It's a major concern because it's the reason why there's an increase in obesity. Our body's cells have no energy to be active therefore we become lazier. Also it can cause dehydration due to kidney's losing the glucose through urine. It can lead to the damaging of nerves and small blood vessels leading to atherosclerosis of arties (heart attack), kidney, and eyes.

Type 2 diabetes, once known as adult-onset or noninsulin-dependent diabetes, is a chronic condition that affects the way your body metabolizes sugar (glucose), your body's main source of fuel. When you have type 2 diabetes, your body is resistant to the effects of insulin — a hormone that regulates the movement of sugar into your cells — or your body doesn't produce enough insulin to maintain a normal glucose level. Untreated, the consequences of type 2 diabetes can be life-threatening.
ReplyDeleteThis is a concern to our generation because child obesity is groqing at an alarming rate. many kdis and teens are eating more fats and less healthy food. Also they are getting less exercise.
Michael Turow
Type 2 diabetes is a chronic disease where there is too much sugar in the blood and not enough insulin made to suppress it. It is a concern to my generation because it is a chronic disease and it is not aided by all of the processed foods that we all consume.

ReplyDelete2. It concerns my generation because more and more kids are becoming obease and less kids are working out and staying healthy.

1. type 2 diabetes is adult-onset diabetes. it's when you have high blood glucose levels or low lnsulin. causes for type 2 diabetes are unhealthy diet and little exercise or even just aging.
ReplyDeletemany people are getting diametes cause of bad diet. it's a growing problem

1.Disease that affects how the body uses glucose, the main type of sugar in the blood.
ReplyDelete2. It concerns our generation becasue less and less people are going out to get exercises
and we do not eat healthy.
1. Type 2 diabetes is when your body doesn't produce enough insulin and the over consumption of process foods. To avoid type 2 diabetes exercise more and don't overeat.
ReplyDelete2. A lot of kids in our generation are way too fat... Again, the over consumption of process foods causes diabetes. Just workout and stop being a fatty.

1.Adult-onset or noninsulin-dependent diabetes, is a chronic condition that affects the way your body metabolizes sugar (glucose), your body's main source of fuel.
ReplyDelete2. It is a concern because more and more kids rely solely on processed foods for their nutrition, increasing obesity rates and the levels of broken down sugars.

1. diabetes is a diseased passed geneticaly that affects the way your body digests sugars
ReplyDelete2. it is a concern because kids diets are terribble

1. Type 2 Diabetes is when your body doesnt creat enough insulin for your body to use it effectively. People can prevent themselves from getting it from eating correctly and exercising.
ReplyDelete2. Kids in my generation are becoming more obese and arent getting enough exercise daily, causing type 2 diabetes to become more common.
Ethan Gladner
1.)In type 2 diabetes insulin is produced unlike type1 but a very little amount is produced or enough is produced but the body does not know how to use it properly
ReplyDelete2.)This is a concern to our generation because the average teenage lifestyle lacks proper exercise with leads to unhealthy habits. It is very easy to get type 2 diabetes with poor nutrition and lack of excercise
