Volleyball Game Play

Watch the clip above and comment on at least two of the prompts below.
  • What do the teams do in order to set up the attack?
  • Where in relation to the net do you see most of their sets?
  • What defensive tactic do they use frequently that we have not introduced in class yet?
  • How do their serves differ from ours and why do we not use th same serve?
  • How do they support each other in the serve recieve?
  • Why is it important to contain the ball on your side of the net off of a serve or a downball?

  1. 1. They use a forearm pass, set, and spike.
    2. Right in front of the net on their own side.
    3. They have more players on each side of the court.
    4. We serve by throwing the ball over the net.
    5. Set up and prepare for the serve.
    6. So your own team is not as predictable.

  2. 1. Teams will usually use different types of moves in order to set up for an attack. They will use the forearm pass, the spike, and the set - In most cases, one teammate will forearm the ball up into the air, next another teammate will set the ball, and lastly, the next teammate will spike the ball down across the other side of the net.
    2. Sets are mainly close to the net, in situations where it is unlikely for somebody to be able to forearm pass the ball over, possibly because of a bad angle, a serve that hits the net, etc.
    3. Their is a defensive tactic not yet introduced to our class which is why you may not have heard of it. However, when I took an online course on volleyball, I read all about different tactics such as perimeter defense which is shown in this game. As well, they have many more players than we use. We use three.
    4. Our class serves using a very simple tactic. It is an underarm pass. This team uses a jumping down-ball which is particularly used by professionals.
    5. Both of the teams set up their teammates with high, open sets so that they are given time to prepare themselves to spike the ball.
    6. The tactic of keeping the ball on your side of the net is to make yourself not seem so obvious. You must confuse the other team and have them believe you are going to do something that in reality, you won't be doing.

  3. 1. They receive the ball with a forearm pass, then set it up high in order for a third teammate to preform a accurate down ball to the other side of the court.
    5. It is important to contain the ball on your side of the court because it allows for the team to set up and prepare to send the most difficult to reach ball to the other side.

    1. They recieve the ball with a forearm pass, set the ball up high, and then someone will spike a down ball.
    2. Their sets are relatively close to the net and high.

  5. 1. To attack, the team uses the spike, the forearm pass and the set.
    2. I see most of the team's sets right next to the net.

  6. 1. They set up the attack by first receiving the serve/spike with a forearm pass/overhead set, and then they continue to keep it up with an overhead set/overhead set, and then they hit it over, usually with a spike/downball.

    4. They throw the ball up very very high, and then jump quite an impressive distance to smack the ball hard over the net. The reason that we do not use this serving technique in class is because it is very hard to 1.) hit the ball and 2.)receive it with another hit on the other side of the net.

    1. They use the forearm pass to control the ball, set, and spike the ball in order to perform an attack.

    4. When they serve, they run up from behind, throw the ball high up in the air, and hit very strong but we are not able to do that because we can't control the ball very well or have accurate aims.

  8. 1.) In order to set up the attack, the teams use the form arm pass and set to set up the spike.

2.)Most of the sets happen just ion front of the net to set up for the spike or downball.

4.the serves are from behind but we cannot do that because it would require too much practice

    3. They jump up and spike the ball right when its coming over
    4. they jump up and serve. we dont because thats too hard
    5. they set each other up to spike the ball
    6. so it is easier to set up the bump set spike

  11. 1. They use a forearm pass then overhead set and the 3rd person comes to spike it down.
    2. The sets and spikes are very close to the net.
    3. The spike the ball a bit further away and towards an open area
    4. They try to hit it hard so the other team cant hit it back. We can't because its to hard and nobody can get it.
    5. They communicate as to which person will get the ball and who will spike it.
    6. It is much easier to get control and get a more controlled spike

  14. 2. The sets go high and near the net.

    6. It is important because the team needs to be able to hit a down ball in order to increase their chances of scoring.

  15. 1. To set up the attack the team will receive the ball with a forearm pass, then another player will set the ball for someone to spike it.

    6. Its is important to contain the ball on your side of the net off of a serve or down ball. This is because then your can use a bump-set-spike combination and set up an attack.

  16. 4. These players throw the ball higher and further in front of them than we do, and they wait until the ball falls down to a certain point until they jump up and serve it over. We don't do this in class because the timing of this serve has to be perfect.

    6. It's important to contain the ball on your side of the net (off of a serve or a downball) because you could then set up your own attack against the other team (using a bump-set-spike combination.)

  17. 3. The defensive tactic that they use frequently that we do not is the block of the down ball. 1 or more players jump up with their hand in the air to stop the down ball. I have attempted this in class before
    4. Their serves differ from ours because they get a running start to throw the ball up, jump very high, and thn hit the ball down to the other side with control and force. We don't do this because it requires a lot of practice and we don't have enough control yet.

  18. the team has to set up controllably so they can have a good downball.

the forearm should stay on the same side so they can set up an attack.

    2. most of the sets are near the net
    3. They have more players than us and the are also diving
    4. they are still using the over hand serve but they are getting a runnig start as well as the throwing the ball really high
    5. they set for another player
    6. so you can recover and attack them back

  20. 3.) They block many balls back by jumping very close to the net with their hands straight up.
4.) They throw their serves up very high, a lot higher than the serves we throw up. We do not do these kinds of serves because they are much more difficult, as it is harder to hit accurately and effectively with that kind of serve; it requires more skill.

    1) They use a forearm pass, set, downfall combo.
    2) Their sets are usually from the middle of their side of the court to closer to the net.

    4) They get a running star and serve from behind the out line. Unlike us they are able to use more power and accuracy in their serve.
    5) they move away from who ever has the ball to give them space.

    1. they used the fore arm pass to stop the spikes
    2. they used bump set spike for offense when given a chance
    3. they pass it to each other rather then hitting it right over with a forearm
    4. they served with a down-ball so it was harder to respond and recover to go on the offensive

    1) most of the time, the players use forearm pass.
    2) They spike when the ball is high, and close to the net.

  28. 1. There is a lot more movement on the court than I had expected. There is little in the way of holding strict positions. They first receive the ball with a forearm pass high and to the middle. This allows for control and a little extra time for the team. Their sets are high and towards the net, and they are immediately followed up with a hard down ball.

    6. It is important to contain the ball because this allows for a more strategic placing of the attack and down ball. Simply batting the ball over the net will not allow for a controlled attack.
