Hinging at the hip is an essential weight lifting technique in order to build proper form at lighter weight so that when lifting heavier weights, proper form feels natural therefore preventing injury that could be long lasting. 19. Well the hip hinge is essential for increasing functional strength and maintaining good posture. Why? Because it forces us to maintain a straight line with our back and prevent curvature of the spine, which means contracting all the small muscles in the core and back that are widely neglected throughout the day. In our everyday lives we have become so used to specific neural recruitment patterns that they become a damaging factor to our health; they create imbalances, weaknesses, and make us more susceptible to injuries. So by doing exercises that involve some type of hip extension or flexion, such as dead lifts or "good mornings" we can correct some imbalances and strengthen weaker areas. We may not think about these things now but we will have to address these problems once we experience the long term effects.

  27. If you practice the hip hinge for exercises and use it to do dead lifts or other things like back squats, then your back will be in good posture and that prevents future back problems. Because as you get older, it is easier and easier to forget how to maintain good posture. If you know how to do it now, it will become a natural thing to do, which prevents health issues later on.

  50. When you hinge at the hips, it allows for a better lifting form, because it alleviates the reliance you have on your back muscles. This is especially important in lifts such as the Dead Lift, where having a deformed hinge (resulting in a curved back to lift the weight) could lead to poor lifting and eventual back injury.

  51. Hinging at the hips is important for a lift because insuring proper form firstly promotes safety. Putting unnecessary pressure on the wrong muscles can be detrimental to your health. Also, proper form works the muscles you want to actually work out by doing the lift, so hinging at the hips is important for that reason too.
