Period 7 Blog 2.1 Carb Crazy!

It seems, from the last post, that most of us are going carb crazy. Many of you have thought about ways to fit protein and fats into your breakfast. This is a good thing. Now you need to look at the rest of your meals and see if you are balancing your meals throughout the day. What happens when we eat all carbohydrate meals?

Let’s look at the digestive process. Everything that you eat gets converted by the digestive system into blood glucose so that it can be used by the body as energy. Proteins and fats take longer to convert and raise the blood glucose levels at a slower rate (this is good). Carbohydrates are converted much more rapidly causing spikes in blood sugar levels. Simple and processed carbohydrates(most of the breakfast food you are eating) cause much more rapid spikes. Grains and sugar are what we are looking to avoid. Most of the carbohydrates you are consuming now are made from grains. Think pizza, pasta, bread, cereal, and any form of processed food. Most processed foods are made from refined grains, starches, and sugars. They are high-glycemic, meaning they cause large swings in blood sugar levels and are associated with greater risk of obesity, heart disease, diabetes, high blood pressure and other chronic health problems. Consider this chain of events: A high glycemic food such as a sugary cereal, or wheat bread is consumed; this causes blood sugar levels to skyrocket, as a result, insulin levels are increased and blood sugar levels are decreased to levels lower than before you consumed the high glycemic carbohydrate (resulting in a feeling of sluggishness), because of this chain of events, the liver is forced to produce higher triglyceride levels which increase cholesterol, the kidneys retain sodium which causes fluid retention, the final result is an increase in blood pressure, Inflammation and hypertension. Vegetables and fruits are carbohydrates that are broken down more slowly by the digestive system and cause a slower rise in blood sugar.

I know this was a long one so I am checking for understanding. For this weeks blog, let me know, in your own words, why high glycemic carbohydrates are a bad food choice.

  1. High glycemic carbohydrates are a bad food choice because they are converted to blood glucose rapidly. This causes blood sugar levels to rise and fall below the normal levels. As a result, high blood pressure occurs which can cause multiple health problems.

  2. High glycemic foods cause an unhealthy and undesirable raise in blood sugar concentration. To deal with this increase of blood sugar, the body produces insulin, a hormone that instructs cells to filter sugar out of the blood stream. After, the sugar has been successfully regulated, a large amount of insulin still exists in the blood stream, causing cells to continue removing glucose from the blood stream. This results in a lowered blood sugar level, which ultimately causes the liver to produce triglyceride, and the kidneys to retain sodium. The production of triglyceride increases cholesterol, and the retention of sodium causes increased blood pressure, inflammation, and hypertension.

  3. Thanks for sharing such nice information here. I like this site as it is very informative and hence people who will come across this site will gain lot of information about it. I am very glad to being a part of this site. I will visit this site in future too.

  4. High glycemic foods are a bad food choice because are easily broken down by the body causingl arge swings in blood sugar levels. This rise and fall in blood sugar can eventually result in obesity, heart disease, diabetes and high blood pressure.

  5. In my opinion from reading this not only is eating processed carbohydrates bad due to the health risk caused by the heavy strain placed on the liver and the rapid change in insulin and blood sugar levels but also there was mention of energy being affected. When we are lifting we are requiring our bodies to output massive amounts of energy to react to a load they are not used to. If we are eating foods that create losses of energy in stead of gains, the point of eating, then we are working against ourselves in the weight room.

  6. Great point Micah,
The damage being done to your body systems causing heart disease, diabetes and cancers does not show up until later on in life. By eliminating processed carbs from your diet you can effect energy levels within days.

  7. Eating processed carbs are bad for your health because they cause your blood pressure to rise and drop unexpectedly. this is due to conversion of the carbs to blood sugar.

  8. high glycemic carbs are bad for you because they cause your blood sugar to be at unsafe levels they dont provide your body with energy like the carbs in fruits. they also cause unsafe rises in blood pressure.

  9. High glycemic foods are bad because they cause high blood sugar levels. Afterwards, the blood sugar level is lower than before putting you in a tired state. The liver creates more cholestoral which is bad for you health

high glycemic foods force our bodies to produce insulin in a short amount of time to lower the high glucose levels in our blood. In the short run this leads to abrupt fluctuations of energy, but worse, over time it puts stress on the pancreas causing diabetes. Also they absorb water from your blood system forcing the kindenys to refine more sodium, which is also lost during perspiration leaving us with a lack sodium. The heart is strained by the increase of cholesterol production increasing heart disease potential. And finally, the ability to kill cancerous cells is decreased, putting one at greater risk to develop significant cancer growth.

  11. High glycemic foods are bad to eat because they are unhealthy and cause your blood sugar levels to increase and then your insulin to increase. This makes the kidneys produce higher triglyceride levels and it causes high cholesterol.

  12. High glycemic carbohydrates are a bad food choice because they are converted much more rapidly causing spikes in blood sugar levels. This causes sudden changes in blood sugar levels. High blood pressure occurs which can cause health problems.

  13. high glycemic carbohydrates are a bad food choice for many reasons. The intake in a lot of high carb meals adds up and affects your body in a negative way. Yeah, before a game, the night before a game you'll want to have a high carb meal for the energy you will gain for your game, thats a positive affect. But if you constantly are eating high carb meals, it adds up in your blood sugar levels, cause high cholesterol, and heart disease.

  14. High glycemic foods are a bad food choice to eat to much of because they can be easily broken down by our body thus causing our blood sugar levels to rise above and below the normal levels. If the high glycemic foods are continued to be consumed then the results later on could be obesity, high blood pressure, diabettes, or a heart disease.

  16. high glycemic carbohydrates are a bad food choice because it causes spikes in blood sugar levels. This can lead to a grater chance of heart disease, diabetes, high blood pressure and other diseases.

  17. High glycemic carbohydrates are a bad food choice because they get converted much more quickly causing spikes in our blood sugar levels. In addition these foods are often unhealthy and not very nutrient dense. By eating these foods as stated above our blood sugar levels increase resulting our insulin levels to increase. Due to the increases our bodies can develop health problems down the road such as heart disease, diabetes, high blood pressure and obesity.

  18. High glycemic carbs when the get into your blood they turn immediately to sugar and this ruins the blood sugar level. When this happens continuously it could cause diabetes obesity and high blood pressure.

  20. eating processed carbohydrates bad because the health risk caused by the big damage in the liver and the dreastic change in insulin and blood sugar levels. Also they said your energy may be effcted. when we lift we have to use a lot of energy because our body is not used to that heavy weight. If we eat food that doesn't give use energy but take it away where doing no good for use in the weight room

  21. Well it's not good for someone to consume too much or only carbohydrates because when it's broken down into glucose, is takes basically a really short amount of time to do it, instead on the other hand fats and proteins take more time to be broken down into glucose and it's much better for you because that makes your blood pressure low and you avoid problems such as obesity and others bad sides of consuming too much carbohydrates.

  25. High glycemic foods cause a spike in blood sugar, followed by a 'crash' in blood sugar level that leaves one feeling sluggish, which is the most noticable short-term effect. However, because of effects on blood sugar, high-glycemic foods can lead to diabetes and high blood pressure because of the strain on your liver.
