Period 8 Basketball Blog #3 Off the Ball

We will start our 5 0n 5 play this week.   There will be 10 people on the court at a time and only 1 ball.  This means the majority of the time you will be without the ball or find yourself defending someone who does not have the ball.  It is important to have a some strategies in mind for what you are going to do when you find yourself in this position, both offensively and defensively.

For this weeks blog, I want you to think about what you are going to do when you do not have the ball.  Give me one offensive strategy you can use when you do not have the ball to help your team score, and one defensive strategy you can use to help your team prevent another team from scoring on you.  We will discuss this in class but if you are confused let me know.

  1. When i don't have the ball, i intend to drive down the court get open so my teammates can pass, preferably to a spot that's good for shooting. In terms of defense, the best thing i can do is stay vigilant, watch the ball, and try to tip it back to one of my own teammates when the opposing team misses the shot.

  2. One offensive strategy that can be used is setting picks for teammates, this will either allow them to get open and receive a pass or allow them to have room to drive and take a shot.
One defensive strategy we can use is to play a 2-3 zone. We can also double team the other team's players.

  3. On offense, I will set picks and make cuts to the hoop. On defense, I will not let anyone have a clean path to the basket and I will contest every shot?

  4. On offense when you don't have the ball it is essential to move around and get open so that your teammate with the ball has the opportunity to pass the ball to you if necessary.

On defense it is always helpful to your team if you stay with the man you are defending and try to prevent them from getting the ball.

  5. One offensive strategy is that you can cut away from the man guarding you so you can get the ball and score

One defensive strategy is to stick to a man and follow him around to prevent the team from passing it

  9. When we are on offense I will try to devise an offensive scheme that involves a lot of passes and fast breaks. On defense I will make sure my team hustles to the ball and plays good strong defense. We will do a 2-3 zone with elaborate coverages. -Jake Ledner

  13. When you do not have the ball but your team does you could get to open space for the pass. When the other team had the ball you can play zone defense, each person on the team protects a certain part of the court.

  20. For offensive strategy get to open space on the court, especially closer to the basket so it will be easier for you to make your shots and set picks to help your teammates

For defensive strategy you must always be guarding your person unless you are playing zones on the court

When you don't have the ball, you should be running to open space and get ready for the pass or set up a pick.
When you have the ball, you should dribble toward opponents basket or pass the ball. Best is shoot the ball and make it

  27. On offense, i will get open so my teammates can pass and to give some room for them to go down to court in case they get the ball.
On defense, I can stay near the hoop, as even though many people like to shoot 3 pointers, when they get close i can catch the rebound and pass to my teammates
